Psychotherapist -- Grief Specialist

This is to let you know a little about me and my counseling practice. I have been in private practice since 1981. I have been teaching Grief Counseling at Salve Regina University since 1995.

I have a general counseling practice. I see people in individual, couple, family and group therapy. I work with both adults and adolescents. I work from a spiritual perspective combined with a humanistic perspective. The work I do might be referred to as heart centered. I focus on helping people see their strengths which then helps them deal with their challenges. Basically, I work with people who are trying to find happiness in life.

For the most part I see clients who are struggling with their relationships -- relationships with themselves, their partner, their family member(s), their work, their body, their spiritual life, their sexuality etc. This struggle might be from current situations or from past emotional, physical or sexual experiences.

I see many people dealing with addictions -- their own, or someone else's in their life. Those addictions might be to alcohol, drugs, food, spending/debting, sex, love/relationship or gambling etc. I am very familiar with 12 Step Programs.

I work with people who are having anxiety and/or depression and are trying to manage their lives.

I also see people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and those questioning their sexuality. Sometimes their issues have to do with their sexuality and sometimes these clients are dealing with general issues but want a safe, supportive, non judgmental therapist.

I have a specialty in grief and loss from death or other losses, such as a relationship or marriage ending, unemployment, disability etc. I work with people with chronic and/or life threatening illnesses. In general I think many issues that clients are working with are grief based. i.e. "I wish that hadn't happened like that, then, to me."

I formerly worked part time as a Bereavement Coordinator at a Hospice doing individual and group work with people who had a recent death in their lives, as well as teaching grief education classes and consulting at agencies and schools where deaths had occurred.

I do both long term and short term counseling. My sessions with clients are interactive. I often give homework! One of my major beliefs is that we are all, always, doing the best we can. And I believe people can learn skills to take better care of themselves and to make clearer choices about what they really want in their lives.

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and I am able to accept most insurances. Currently I am a participating provider for Blue Cross Blue Shield and Health Care Value Management.
